My Posture, Breathing and Strength Have Improved
I have been doing Pilates for a little over a year now and my posture, breathing, and strength have all improved. I had ankle surgery in November and was unable to do any sort of cardio for a couple of months, but continued Pilates just a couple of weeks after my surgery. When I started doing cardio again, I thought I would be really out of shape and short of breath, however, the opposite was true. I was astonished! The trainers at the Pilates Center of Pittsburgh really listen and shape a workout plan that best suits your needs. I would recommend The Pilates Center of Pittsburgh to anybody!
Pre and Post-Baby
I started with the Pilates Center of Pittsburgh when I was 6 weeks pregnant and went until 40 weeks! The trainers were great at adapting to my changing needs. I’m now back post-baby and loving my sessions. I highly recommend them for all levels!
Stand Straighter and Feel Stronger
I have been going to the Pilates Center of Pittsburgh for about one year. I tried it out on a Groupon last April. I was looking for a workout that would center on core, balance, strength and flexibility and I knew Pilates was good for that. I went to the first two sessions and knew I had found what I was looking for. I spent the summer (in between travels) trying every class and session available for me. Once the school year started, I settled on a regular schedule of three times a week. I usually do a private, a semi-private, and a tower class each week. My schedule has centered on working with Lesley and Michelle, but I have had sessions with most of the teachers and I found them all to be wonderful to work with. I love the way Pilates makes me feel. I stand straighter and feel stronger and more toned.
Over the course of the summer I discovered that I have an arthritic hip. I had been getting leg pain since last spring, before I started Pilates, but I thought I had just pulled a muscle. Now I had even more reason to do Pilates, my doctor feels that it has probably helped me and that I should continue what I do. I always walk better as I leave the studio than I did when I walked in. On Thursdays I would see clients working with Michael Duray and I thought he might be able to help me with my hip. I have had weekly sessions with him since the fall and he has helped me tremendously. I really look forward to my Thursday session with him.
I enjoyed the Pilates so much that I looked for places to take classes during my travels last summer. It was interesting to see the different approaches in the different studios. I found that I like the Pilates Center of Pittsburgh the best!
Studio Perfect Fit for Me
Ever since I first started with The Pilates Center one year ago, I knew I found a perfect fit for me. I was in a transition period, looking for a good Pilates studio where I felt comfortable when I found the center. The staff is incredibly friendly.
I cannot give enough credit to my trainer. She is excellent. She knew to start slow with me since I had not been practicing Pilates in a while and then to make the exercises harder when she saw improvement. She clearly recognizes my strengths and weaknesses. She will motivate you, correct you when needed. Most importantly, when you are performing an exercise correctly, she will compliment you so you know you are doing the right thing.
She knows my hamstrings are still tight and need focus, which is why she pushes me to always have good straight legs in the exercises (which is also good form). She keeps everyone moving even when there are four or five people working out at the same time. She is great at making sure everyone gets some individual attention when needed.
I am so happy to say that (coupled with good nutrition) I have lost 10lbs since I started working out. I am almost back to the weight I was before I started law school I am sleeping better and am more energized than ever. I hardly ever take mid-day naps anymore, even when I have a full day of work and school.
Thank you for everything you have helped me achieve this past year.

Staff Enthusiasm and Love of the Art
I discovered Pilates at a stage in my life when I most needed its structure. For some time, I had neglected my physical and emotional being and needed to shake up my self image in a dramatic way. Initially, I did not realize this and pursued Pilates as a way to meet new people and maybe get some exercise. Over time the people at the studio and their approach to teaching showed me the value of what I had stumbled upon. I started thinking differently about my body and how it worked.
The staff at the studio do not simply show you exercises. They teach you the why and method behind the Pilates practice. Pilates must be learned in progressive stages over time as you gain control and understanding of your body. They are skilled at teaching what you need to know when you are ready for it. As the work gets more challenging, their enthusiasm and love of the art keeps you striving to do better.
I have done many things in the past: weight training, running, spinning, swimming, yoga. None of these disciplines significantly impacted my thinking on physical and mental fitness. They were just ways to get exercise. Pilates completely changed my perspective on what fitness means and how best to achieve it. I still practice other forms of exercise but now I pursue them with the core framework of Pilates as a guide. This greatly improves their effectiveness.

Unconditional Encouragement and Support
I was suffering with sciatic nerve pain and diagnosed with spinal stenosis. I tried a few different Pilates classes to help me stretch, improve flexibility and strengthen my muscles. Sometimes I would forget how to do something in class and I would feel so uncomfortable.
Then I tried the Pilates Center of Pittsburgh.
For over 5 years now the Center has given me unconditional encouragement and support. I am not in pain all the time anymore and I have never felt better. Thank you Pilates Center of Pittsburgh!

Great and Knowledgeable Teachers
1. How long have you been coming to the Pilates Center of Pittsburgh?
3 1/2 years.
2. What has Pilates done for you?
Pilates has given me a new understanding of my body alignment – the abdominals, shoulders, hips, sacrum, tailbone, ribs, lengthen, anchor, connect, abdominals in and up, oh my!
3. What do you like about the Pilates Center/Pilates in general?
The Pilates Center of Pittsburgh has such great and knowledgeable teachers who truly love and have a passion for what they do!
I love the way my body feels lengthened and ‘right’ after each Pilates session – I am always challenged and sometimes surprised at how a small tweak or an ‘aha moment’ when I finally get it in my body what the teacher has been telling me can finally get me to the point in an exercise that I have been working so hard to accomplish.

Thank You is Not Enough for Me to Say
Stressful weeks are normal for me, normal for all of us. So many things pull me off balance and cause pressure that build up that my body eventually will give in and the headaches come. I do not fear them like I used to, they will go away quickly and I know how to handle them quite well. It has been a stressful morning. Questions from my parents again about why I spend so much of my time and money on that thing I do so often instead of concentrating on what I should be doing – career, family, finding the right person to help me achieve all of that, saving for what should be “important”. There is noise all around me yet all I really seem to notice is my breath; in through my nose filling my lungs full, shoulders are back, I exhale thru my mouth. I feel the stress leaving and I concentrate on only that and what I am trying to do.
I am frequently asked questions about Pilates and why it means so much to me and my life. To say that it has importance is to not understand how it has crept into my heart and has become a way for me to understand myself, how I think and how I can be a better person. When I started my journey with Pilates I was not what I would see as a good person. I was not in good shape, I was not mentally or physically strong and I was not in any way able to simply go anywhere or to anyone to help. I needed to find the right place to get to inside my mind and body where I could change all that. If I had stayed on that course I do not know where I would be right now. That was then, about 6 years ago, where I saw a sign outside a very “friendly” looking building that beckoned me to come inside. Once I was there and after just a handful of classes, I knew I had found my “home” and my path. There was no judgment, there was no competition; there was just me – my trainers, my routines, the silence and the work. Oh, and a one request, a commitment to the Pilates philosophy. I dove in and never looked back, even when the noise became too loud.
Now, I can’t think of myself without the word “strong”. I know that I have grown so much both mentally and physically yet I still have so much more to do. Even that desire to learn is something that Pilates has awakened in me. The pure joy in a challenge or wanting to be better or more precise at everything that I do is inspiring. So inspiring that I so want to share what I have learned with others and take on my own teacher certifications. My passion and journey has shown me that not only can I learn but I know that I can share and teach all that Pilates can offer to others.
I have had a very interesting and what most would call a “full” life, but no career or any other “work” has given me the balance, strength, curiosity, passion, commitment and joy then Pilates. If it were not for the Pilates Center of Pittsburgh and all of their amazing instructors, I have no idea if I would be the woman I am now, someone I see as capable of anything yet has very simple dreams; to share this passion for Pilates with others and to experience joy in life every day. I used to spend countless hours looking at expensive shoes or jeweler and thinking to myself, “someday”. Now, like a “guy or gal” who drools over the latest sports cars, I look at the new Reformers, Towers and Cadillac and think, “Someday”!!
I realize that Pilates is for life and my life, my body my mind has changed because of it. My journey has only been for what I see as a handful of years. I truly look forward to seeing the woman I become after years and years of working and learning and growing with Pilates.
Thank you is not enough for me to say.

Positive, Motivating Staff
Four and a half year ago I walked into the Pilates Center of Pittsburgh a little anxious and a lot scared. I was overweight, with serious arthritis in both knees. When I first went to the studio and met Lesley Davenport, she was very comforting and reassuring about Pilates, and how it could help me. I was also impressed by the positive attitude Lesley and her staff had.
This positive attitude continues today and is something you notice on the clients as well as the staff. In four and a half years I have lost two pants sizes, 60 pounds, and restructured my body to the point it has improved my golf swing. I would not have been able to accomplish any of this without the positive, motivating staff at the Pilates Center of Pittsburgh. Thank you Pilates Center of Pittsburgh.

Improved Flexibility and Core Strength
Back in February of 2009 I was experiencing some health issues and reached out to a football strength and conditioning coach I know who suggested Pilates as a form of physical fitness which I might benefit from. I began a search in the South Hills of Pittsburgh to locate an appropriate studio and found that Lesley Davenport and her Pilates Center of Pittsburgh was by far the most responsive to my needs.
I have been attending classes, both private and group, for over three years now and have improved my flexibility and core strength significantly. Lesley and her staff, including Cecile, Michelle, Michael and others, have been very attentive to my personal needs on each and every visit. If you are looking for a form of exercise to help benefit your overall physical fitness, than I encourage you to take a look at the Pilates Center of Pittsburgh.

Stay Active and Pain Free
I have been a client of the Pilates Center of Pittsburgh for around 5 years and I have trained with Cecile in a semi private. I am a 53 year old woman that has many physical issues that I refuse to let them limit my activities. I have a bad shoulder, knees and flat feet.
Cecile has been able to strengthen my weak areas and increased my flexibility. Pilates allows me to stay active and pain free. I recently lost 45 pounds and it has been Pilates has been key in helping me maintain my weight loss. Without having joint pain I can walk, bike and Zumba which is necessary to keep the weight from returning.
I also am a severe Asthmatic. I took a class prior my annual breathing test. It was the first time in 20 years my breathing was in the normal range. My doctor stated whatever you are doing to increase your lung capacity-keep doing it. Pilates is a great way to gracefully and actively stay healthy as we age.

Pilates Has Helped That
I have been coming to Pilates Center of Pittsburgh for about 2 1/2 years now, and I came specifically for the purpose of trying to strengthen the muscles supporting my partially torn rotator cuff. Pilates has helped that. It is a battle to keep the strength and range of motion up with problem, but it has definitely helped me.
Also, Leslie is great at knowing what to do for different injuries and the rehabilitation of strength in injured areas.
